KALAMAZOO, MI — A Kalamazoo man accused of strangling a 68-year-old woman to death has pleaded no contest to a charge of second-degree murder. Marvin Delaney Humphrey, 54, entered the plea on May 23, in Kalamazoo County Circuit Court, for the November 2024 death of Minette Weaver. Weaver was described as a “frail woman who used a walker to get around,” according to court documents. Humphrey had faced charges of open murder and being a habitual offender.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — It’s been quite the homecoming week for Billy Strings. After wrapping up a couple weeks on the road with Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan, the Ionia County native had a few scheduled days off prior to kicking off his summer tour with two nights at Grand Rapids’ Van Andel Arena. The 32-year-old began those days off by announcing Monday that he would return this June to the Charlotte Bluegrass Festival in Eaton County — the first festival he ever attended.

KALAMAZOO, MI — As Beacon Health System prepares to finalize its acquisition of four Southwest Michigan Ascension hospitals, the Indiana-based health provider has announced some key leadership moves. On Wednesday, May 28, Beacon announced Carl Risk will become president of Borgess Hospital. Risk, who has been president of Elkhart General Hospital in Indiana since 2016, was also named integration executive for all of the Southwest Michigan facilities being acquired by Beacon.

BATTLE CREEK, MI — Oak Hill Cemetery in Battle Creek is expected to be closed for at least two more months as the result of recent storm damage. The cemetery, 255 South Ave., announced the lengthy closure in a social media post on Friday, May 23. "Our cemetery has experienced extensive damage due to the storm last Thursday night (May 15)," the post states.
