A 19-year-old Horowhenua man led police on a high speed chase through the middle of Levin after performing a burnout and losing a wheel that almost hit a nearby pedestrian, a court has heard. Taiawhio Wakefield-Taunoa had his restricted license for just one month when police were called to the street racer gathering on Hōkio Beach Rd at midnight on May 25.

State Highway 8 between Fairlie and Twizel and SH80 Aoraki Mount Cook Highway have been closed on Thursday morning due to black ice. At 5.30am, SH8 between Fairlie and Twizel and SH80 Mt Cook Highway were closed and about 6.30am Lindis Pass was also closed. NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is warning motorists to take extra case on SH83 between Kurow and Ōmārama due to winter driving conditions.

A 22-year-old Horowhenua man will need more time to consider his pleas to charges relating to a large boy racer invasion that saw multiple people hurt, a court has heard. Tyrone Murphy made his second appearance in the Levin District Court on Tuesday, accused of several offences relating to the May 31 gathering. He made his first appearance shortly after the invasion that saw more than 1000 people gather to watch street racing and burnouts at various locations in Horowhenua and Manawatū.
