For the Bunce sisters — Daryn, Lin, Kendall and June — church was a family affair, and their childhood centered around Coggins Memorial Baptist Church in Lexington, North Carolina. Their grandfather, Dearl, was the pastor. Their grandmother, Betty Lou, was the music minister before their mother, Anita, stepped into the role. And their father, Linwood, served as a deacon. Sunday mornings and evenings and Wednesday nights were spent inside the red brick building for worship and fellowship.

Betsy Rives (’08) grew up surrounded by paints, markers and crayons, all the usual creative tools for kids. But, through her parents, Rives also learned that creativity could extend beyond a drawing or painting and into everyday experiences. “Anything could be what we would call an adventure,” Rives says. “And an adventure could be as simple as taking a different route somewhere and timing it and seeing if it was faster or slower. It was rooted in traditional scientific inquiry.

For Caldwell Tanner (’09), the enduring memories from his four years as a member of Wake Forest’s Lilting Banshees comedy troupe don’t involve a favorite quirky character or show-stopping scene. It’s the late nights he spent with fellow troupe members, putting in the work to build sketches. During those sessions, he learned there are far more ways to be funny than simply being wildly personable or charismatic; the best laughs come from working together.
