Former CNN anchor John Avlon won the 1st Congressional District Democratic primary by 40 points on Tuesday, buoyed by higher turnout and after emphasizing that he was more likely to flip the seat than chemist Nancy Goroff, political analysts said Wednesday. In mailings, commercials and stump speechs, Avlon repeatedly asserted that he was better poised than Goroff to win in a general matchup with freshman Rep. Nick LaLota (R-Amityville).

Nassau lawmakers are expected to vote Monday on a bill backed by County Executive Bruce Blakeman to bar transgender female athletes from taking part in women's and girls sports on county properties, despite opposition from civil rights groups and advocates of the LGBTQ+ community. The 19-member county legislature is set to vote on the measure Monday afternoon, two weeks after the legislature's Rules Committee gave preliminary approval.
