Halfway through Sunday's national title men's rowing race, the Washington Huskies found themselves locked in a close competition with Ivy League power Harvard. The Huskies led Harvard by .16 seconds and it looked like the Crimson might be closing the gap. But UW seemed to hit another gear, and gradually pulled away to successfully defend its Intercollegiate Rowing Association national title on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J.UW's winning time was 5:29.78.

By Scott Hanson - The Seattle Times (TNS) Mariners starter Emerson Hancock was outstanding, Leody Taveras had a huge game and Seattle kept its lead in the American League West. Those bright spots were overshadowed, however, by a dreadful 10th inning for the Mariners in which reliever Collin Snider gave up seven runs - five earned - in a 9-3 loss to the Washington Nationals on Thursday night at T-Mobile Park.
