Fort Bend ISD is projecting a potential $34.6 million deficit headed into the 2025-26 school year, a gap it is hoping to close in part by reducing costs, eliminating open positions and possibly increasing taxes, district officials said this week. The board plans to adopt the budget at its June 23 meeting. Fort Bend ISD is the sixth largest in Texas with about 80,000 students, although enrollment has been declining.

When it comes to education, Texas ranks No. 25 out of 50 states, according to data released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report in the Best State rankings. The Best States in America rankings included health care, education, infrastructure, fiscal stability and crime, with Utah leading the way. Utah was No. 1 for the third straight year, while New Jersey landed on top for education overall. According to the data, Florida led the pack for higher education.
