Plans to develop a transport interchange at the relocated Hairmyres Station have been given the go-ahead. Councillors on this week’s planning committee (August 27), approved plans to develop a park-and-ride facility with integrated transport facilities at the East Kilbride station. Elected members added a condition to the plans to include a new pedestrian crossing to help facilitate users of both the station and the nearby St James Retail Centre.

Plans to develop a McDonald’s drive-thru in Larkhall have been given the go-ahead despite initial recommendations to refuse the application. Councillors at South Lanarkshire’s planning committee yesterday (August 27) knocked back officials when they voted in favour of the fast food restaurant on Borland Drive which is set to generate up to £60,000 in business rates each year for the council to help fund key services, and 120 jobs for the local area.

South Lanarkshire young people are finding positive destinations when they leave school thanks to a range of initiatives. Councillors on the education resources committee this week learned about the programmes that are available to school pupils to help them into work, apprenticeships and further education which has resulted in 96.9 per cent of school leavers in 2022/23 finding a positive destination.

Over £150,000 is available for nine South Lanarkshire communities. A participatory budgeting process has been launched across the area and there is £155,000 in place for local groups in specific areas to launch projects that will boost their local areas.
