Footwear company Skechers is suing LL Bean, claiming the Freeport, Maine, retailer copied a patent-protected heel design and used it in one of their products. The lawsuit was filed Monday in federal court in New York, according to court documents.Founded in 1992, Skechers is now the third largest shoe company in the world and its products have been endorsed by such celebrities as Martha Stewart, Megan Trainor and Snoop Dogg, the court documents say.

President Joe Biden has approved a major disaster declaration for Cumberland and York counties, stemming from damage caused by an early April Nor'easter. Gov. Janet Mills requested the disaster declaration for Cumberland and York counties in a letter to Biden on May 2.

Opponents of a new law that would require Maine to designate all of its electoral votes to the presidential candidate who wins the national popular vote have launched an effort to overturn the law. Known as a People's Veto, the effort requires backers to collect at least 67,682 signatures by Aug. 8 in order to force a referendum that would appear on the November ballot. Gov. Janet Mills allowed the bill to become law without her signature. It is scheduled to take effect in August.

Work won't begin until November, but a dredging vessel was towed into Wells Harbor on Thursday.York County Emergency Management Agency bought the vessel for $1.5 million, according to county officials. The vessel was assembled in Portland and then towed by a tugboat to Wells Harbor on Thursday. Officials said this is the first time that a county in Maine has purchased its own vessel.
