You don't need a ticket to experience some of the romance of Lincoln Center's operas and ballets. Arrive about an hour before showtime on a spring evening and you can freely observe people in varied finery making their way up the plaza's steps and past its fountain. Amid the parade of evening wear and cocktail attire on a Friday in early May, James R. Palmisano emerged from stage right - more precisely, from the northern edge of the performing arts complex on Manhattan's Upper West Side.

The blink of an eye is rarely enough time to decide whether to pull out my camera when someone passes by on the street. "We go around the city, take pictures and just have fun," said Mr. Omoruyi, an 18-year-old mechanical engineering student at City College in Harlem.

A good eye is essential for street style photography, but sometimes getting a shot has a lot to do with serendipity. Had I not decided to linger for a bit on the block where I encountered Christopher Skala and Alexandra Cadell in London, our paths would never have crossed. So much about them caught my eye, from their similarly shaped glasses frames, to the ways both wore their scarves, to the complementary bright tones of their clothes.

The hats were back out at the Easter Parade and Bonnet Festival in New York City on Sunday. Up and down Fifth Avenue in Midtown, spectators and Easter revelers alike were treated to a crowd wearing the most colorful costumes, and Sunday best, imaginable. The notable looks were plenty, from many variations of bunny to botanical confections and great sartorial tailoring harking back to the Jazz Age.
