The Alberta Chambers of Commerce says it has conducted a survey that found 41 per cent of businesses in the province will struggle to pay back Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) loans by the federal government’s Jan. 18 deadline. “We have the statistical data supporting the fact that we know businesses in Alberta are being challenged by the repayment of this loan,” said Alberta Chambers of Commerce CEO and president Shauna Feth.

The owner of the Edmonton bar that two men attended before dying outside in the cold in 2017 and 2018 told a fatality inquiry Thursday that he thinks about the deaths all the time. “You never forget about it,” Jesse Kupina said. “I think it lives in your subconscious forever.”The week-long fatality inquiry is looking into the circumstances leading up to the deaths of 18-year-old Tyler Emes and 20-year-old Mohamed Munyeabdi.

A fatality inquiry continued Tuesday for two young men who were found dead in freezing conditions after leaving a south Edmonton nightclub — one in November 2017 and the other in November 2018. The proceedings are set to last all week. Eighteen-year-old Tyler Emes, a university student, was found dead outside the Ranch Roadhouse in the snow on Nov. 19, 2017. A year later, on Nov. 18, 2018, 20-year-old Mohamed Munyeabdi was found dead and partially frozen under a car near Calgary Trail and 63 Avenue.

The Hamlet of Conklin is frustrated over what it says are roadblocks created by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo (RMWB) as it hopes to improve the housing situation in the Alberta community. The Conklin Resource Development Advisory Committee (CRDAC) has released the results of a survey which found that 86 per cent of residents in the hamlet are housing insecure. Homes are lacking essentials like power and running water, while some are covered in mould.
