Mike McGuire, who currently is the majority leader and will take over the position of senate president pro tempore in February 2024. "I have a track record here on the North Coast.     After more than two hours of discussion at Tuesday's Humboldt County Board of Supervisors meeting, the board ultimately voted in favor of one of three options presented by the Measure Z Ad Hoc Committee to address the county's $12 million budget shortfall going into the next fiscal year. The option the board went for will deallocate funding for the Department of Health and Human Services' (DHHS) Mobile Intervention Services Team (MIST) starting in July 2024.

    After intense pushback, Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal has changed his stance on a decision he made to deny a dying man his request to donate his organs. The family of Hoopa Valley tribal member Eric Matilton was grief-stricken when they learned that Matilton was on life support after an apparent suicide attempt in his cell at the Humboldt County Jail. This grief was accelerated when they learned that their loved one would not be allowed his wish to donate his organs.

    New information has been released on the officer-involved shooting in Eureka on Sunday. According to the initial press release, the shooting occurred behind the Humboldt County Library following a brief pursuit of a male subject who had fled from a traffic stop on M and Second Streets. Per an update released by the Eureka Police Department on Friday, the man involved in the shooting, and ultimately died from his injuries, has been identified as 31-year-old Matthew Robert Williams of Cutten.

    Local non-profit Humboldt Asians and Pacific Islanders In Solidarity (HAPI) is currently fundraising for a Chinatown monument to symbolize the history of Chinese Americans in Eureka and the mass expulsion that occurred in 1885. A little more than a century-and-a-half ago, Eureka was bustling with Chinese-American immigrants who mostly lived in what is now considered Downtown Eureka.
