(WETM) — Sirens rang out in the area of Jerusalem Hill on Saturday after a fire ripped through a home in Elmira. Thick smoke and heavy flames were seen coming from a home on Bowlby Road, just off of Jerusalem Hill Road, sometime after 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 12.
Purse bingo event raises funds for Horseheads Football Backers Club

HORSEHEADS, N.Y. (WETM) — The sold-out bingo fundraising event called Purse Bingo helped raise money for the Horseheads Football Backers Club. Almost 200 people attended the Horseheads Elks Lodge to play more than 10 games of bingo in the hope of winning prizes. Local businesses donated about 100 items consisting of purses and raffle baskets to benefit the event.
Horseheads’ Linda L. Miller to present Navajo Highways in Elmira

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — Horseheads native and Hollywood producer Linda L. Miller is scheduled to show a TV series called Navajo Highways on Sunday, March 30. The screening will take place at the Park Church in Elmira, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., featuring three episodes. Miller said that the TV series focuses on the history, culture, and language of the Navajo People. The characters featured in the series will be puppets and guest stars from where it was filmed in Utah.
Homeless encampment on Lackawanna Rail Trail still unaddressed

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — The homeless campsite at the Lackawanna Rail Trail sits on state and private property in the town of Elmira. Sean Mickle, who owns around 33 acres of the property where some of the campsite sits, stated that the camp started to happen a couple of months ago which led to where it is now. Since 2020, Mickel has owned the property between I-86 and the Chemung River.
City of Elmira to remove campsite after deadline passes

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — The city of Elmira is expected to remove the campsite in Elmira’s South Side after property owners failed to do it within their time limit. A majority of the trash and debris around Erie Street, Home Street, and in a wooded area near an elevated rail line, is on private property. It has still not yet been removed. Elmira City Manager Michael Collins said that the city code department cited the owners who were given 48 hours to clean up the camp.
Chemung County homeless camps remain cluttered with trash and debris

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — Trash and debris are still left at a couple of homeless camps around Chemung County. One of the camps is located in Elmira’s South Side. The city of Elmira said on Thursday, March 20, that it was going to be cleaned up. Trash was seen leftover near an underpass on Home Street and by the American LaFrance building on Erie Street. A tent was still standing on an elevated rail line near a wooded area where trash was scattered around.
Fay’s Maple Products hosts pancake fundraiser for local charities

BENTLEY CREEK, Pa. (WETM) — The decades-old Pancake Days fundraiser at Fay’s Maple Products in Bradford County continues its tradition of supporting the community. Since 1984, the family-run maple farm has been holding its all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast one weekend each year. The money raised from the event is channeled to local organizations through the Big Pond Lions Club. According to Douglas Fay, co-owner of Fay’s Maple Products, the family has been members of the club since the early 1950s.
Get Outside and Thrive Expo takes place at Arnot Mall

(WETM) — Exhibitors from upstate New York and the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania showcased their outdoor items in an expo called “Get Outside and Thrive” at the Arnot Mall Event Center on the weekend of March 22-23. Around 2,000 people visited the center, where more than 60 vendors displayed items for fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, and more.
Head shaving event raises funds for pediatric cancer research

CORNING, N.Y. (WETM) — People participated in a head-shaving event in Corning to raise money in support of pediatric cancer research. Carey’s Brew House on Bridge Street in Corning hosted a gathering where more than 40 people got their hair cut off. The funds raised will go towards supporting the St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Some volunteers in attendance had their heads shaved previously, while others came for the first time.
Elmira College students fundraise for Children’s Miracle Network

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) — Elmira College students banded together to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network at Arnot Ogden Medical Center in the annual Elmira College Dance Marathon. The event was open to the public, and the proceeds went towards supporting children with pediatric care and services to their families. Fairy tale-themed games were featured in the marathon, at no charge. Around 55 students volunteered to put together the event.
