    NORTH ADAMS — The dilapidated two-story structure atop the North Adams Public Library, known as the library’s belvedere, could be fixed by November. But since contractor Larochelle Construction of West Springfield won’t be ready to work until mid-summer, the city will have to turn down a $75,000 Mass Historic grant that it had been in line for. “That had to be spent by June,” Mayor Jennifer Macksey said Friday.

    CLARKSBURG — Debate on borrowing $500,000 for a new elementary school roof dominated Wednesday’s annual town meeting, with voters eventually approving the idea by a required two-thirds majority. The 127 voters in attendance also accepted a proposed $5.4 million budget, including $1.86 million to run the town and $3.08 million for the school department, as well as the initial vote on borrowing money for the roof.

In a move similar to a March resolution that declared North Adams a sanctuary city for LGBTQIA+ people, the City Council voted on Tuesday 5-3 in favor of a resolution condemning the concept of American dictators or monarchs.

    WILLIAMSTOWN — A faulty oil boiler at Sweetwood, a local retirement community, prompted a multi-department emergency response on Memorial Day after carbon monoxide was suspected inside the building. The Williamstown Fire Department responded to the initial report of a gas odor and quickly discovered a malfunctioning burner was “creating a carbon monoxide condition within the building,” Fire Chief Jeffrey Dias said.
