A construction company and its director have been fined after a worker fell through the roof of a sheep barn and suffered life-changing injuries. Jack Croft, 30, was working for Norman Iveson Steel Products, as part of a project to extend the barn in Leyburn, North Yorkshire. Roof sheets needed to be installed, bridging the gap between the old roof and new. Mr Croft, from Bedale, was carrying out the work on October 11 2022 when he stepped onto a fragile roof light which broke under his weight.

Together the metal represents a Noble Comb – a device to prepare wool for spinning during the industrial revolution – and a worsted mule which was used in the textile industry. Both were in storage in Halifax but thanks to volunteers and an army of helpful companies these items are being re-assembled ready for visitors to admire at the Calderdale Industrial Museum later this year or early next. They were moved back to the museum by James Garside and Son.

It was given to Simon Armitage by his father. “It wasn’t great,” said Simon who grew up in Marsden near Huddersfield. “The heater didn’t work, it didn’t have power steering so you needed good biceps to steer it, and it was very awkward to work on mechanically. “I didn’t like it but it did help me to be mobile.”Simon, who studied at Manchester University and worked as a probation officer, won £4,000 in a poetry competition and upgraded to a Ford Fiesta which he much preferred.

So where has Maserati been in recent years? While Porsche, McLaren, Ferrari and co have been busy, this Italian brand might have been addormentato (asleep). But this supercar brand is in business and one of its key creations is the GranTurismo, a model with a heritage stretching back almost 80 years. Iconic, say Maserati. It’s an over-used word but it might just be appropriate here and it is proof that this Italian purveyor of motoring exotica, far from snoozing has actually been quietly productive.
