    When freshman Bradley Shepherd first joined the Savannah College of Art and Design (Georgia) Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association team, he didn’t realize how much the team would positively affect his life, both in and out of the saddle. Shepherd, who said he didn’t know what breeches and show coats were before joining the team, grew up in North Wales, Pennsylvania, and Montreal, and while his father and sister rode casually, he had very little riding experience.

    Fourteen years before Liza Towell Boyd rode Ondine D’Orleans into the Rolex Stadium at the Kentucky Horse Park to accept their red ribbon from the classic round of this year’s Platinum Performance/USHJA International Hunter Derby Championship, another chestnut was in that same arena collecting major accolades. And in a way, that horse’s win directly led to “Ondine’s” top finish.

    Fiona Howard, the horse-mad child of an American mother and British father, first came to the United States from her native England when she was 16. She was seeking treatment for dystonia, a muscle condition that was weakening and warping her body, and ultimately spent most of her first several years here, from ages 16 to 22, in a hospital bed at Boston Children’s Hospital. She started riding again when she was strong enough, and got into para-dressage in 2022.

    Team USA made history at the Paris Paralympic Games today, winning the country’s first team gold medal and ending Great Britain’s nearly 30-year reign at the top of the sport. Rookie Paralympian Fiona Howard lead the way Friday at the Palace of Versailles as the only rider to hit 80% at these Games.

    All four members of the U.S. Para Dressage Team have qualified for Saturday’s freestyle competition at the Paris Paralympic Games after the conclusion of their individual tests. World No. 1 Grade IV athlete Kate Shoemaker was the only American to ride Wednesday. A spook late in her test aboard Vianne knocked them out of medal contention. Shoemaker and the 8-year-old U.S.-bred Hanoverian mare (Vitalis—Raureif, Ramiro’s Bube) scored 72.22% to finish fifth.
