    When it comes to horses and Hollywood, equestrians know not to hold their breath for realistic portrayals of riding and horse care. Arbitrary whinnying, improper tack, bouncing riders—horse people know how to practice a bit of cognitive dissonance to sit through the equestrian faux pas often depicted on screen. But after the Nov. 17 episode of “Yellowstone,” a fictional series following a Montana ranch family, one scene had a demographic of viewers especially worried: equine veterinarians.

    Three years ago, I moved to the United Kingdom with my horse, “Sig,” due to my U.S. Air Force assignment. It was supposed to be the adventure of a lifetime, and I wanted to document it through my Chronicle blogs for everyone to experience it with me. I intended the “Air Horse One” series to be a regular feature, detailing the challenges of moving a horse abroad, the differences in horse keeping in a foreign country, riding, competing and more. However, life had other plans.

    By ARMAND LEONETraditional padded safety vests for fall protection have been on the equestrian market for about 15 years. Initially designed for the cross-country phase of eventing, their use has expanded to other equestrian disciplines. The move to mandate protective vests—often called back or body protectors—in competition has been much discussed, but I don’t think a blanket rule is necessarily a good idea.

    “Mom, how could you have scheduled the dentist today, so I can’t ride!” My teen daughter glared at me. “You know this is my last few weeks to ride her.” At first, I was angry at the disrespect, and then anger morphed into melancholy. My daughter was in her last days with a beautiful mare she had leased for a year. It was the closing of yet another horse-related chapter in her young life. Another life lesson in the art of letting go and grappling with loss.

    The 2024 Platinum Performance/USEF Talent Search Final—East wrapped up on Sunday at the USET Foundation Headquarters in Gladstone, New Jersey, crowning Taylor Cawley as the winner after Phases III and IV. During Phase III, athletes tackled a jumper-style course under the supervisions of judges Nicole Shahinian-Simpson and Ellen Raidt, with scores doubled for the overall competition tally. Taylor Cawley, Amira Kettaneh, Olivia Sweetnam and JJ Torano advanced to the decisive Phase IV, the ride-off.
