JOPLIN, Mo. — A group of people are traveling in pairs throughout Joplin to get an idea of how many people are homeless in the city. Once each year at this time Casey Vanstory, and other employees of Economic Security, go out in teams of two for the purpose of finding and counting the number of unhoused people living in Joplin. Most of them live in wooded areas that may just be a few yards off some of the busiest streets in Joplin. It didn’t take her very long to find someone.

JOPLIN, Mo. — A monthly storytime event for kids at the Joplin Public Library is drawing in a new audience. The event has become popular with kids of all ages lately. The third Tuesday of each month beginning at 10 a.m. inside the Joplin Public Library you can find youth services librarian Christina Matekel-Gibsontelling tales to kids as part of the Story Corner. Kids and their parents have always been the primary audience for Story Corner.

DIAMOND, Mo. — Decades before it was Dr. King’s dream, a Four State native preached a message of love and understanding between people of different races. The George Washington Carver National Monument in Diamond was the first national park facility named after an African American. While Carver was born in Diamond, he would reach the pinnacle of his notoriety while living and teaching in Alabama.

NEVADA, Mo. — An area organization says “thank you” for helping them help people in need. The single largest fundraiser for the Vernon County United Way over the last 40 years has been an annual event held in the fall. This year’s version raised nearly $9,000. And Shelby Lightwine with the Vernon County United Way says the need for funds this year has never been greater.
