The subject was also a major focal point of KVOE’s Talk of Emporia Tuesday with Chase County Sheriff Jacob Welsh. The reason is that the Chase County Detention Center is a federally contracted facility, housing individuals for various purposes, including alleged undocumented immigrants being held by immigration officials.

Investigators continue piecing together how a home exploded in east Emporia late Wednesday afternoon. Emergency responders and law enforcement rapidly converged in the 1800 block of East Sixth after initial calls just before 5 pm. Emporia Fire says it noticed a collapsed home heavily involved in flames as they arrived.

While conditions around the area have been more conducive to boating in recent days, a pair of car shows in the KVOE listening area Saturday saw a very strong turnout. First was the fifth annual Chase County Old School Development District car show in Cottonwood Falls. The car show came after significant flooding across Chase County from Tuesday til this weekend, which did affect turnout slightly, with just over 30 vehicles attending, according to spokesperson Lee Anne Coester.

Early forecasts were a bit bleak, but conditions turned out near perfect for the fifth annual Bryan Douglas Memorial Softball Tournament Saturday. A half dozen teams took part in the annual fundraiser supporting the Choose How You Respond Fund, established in memory of Douglas, a longtime local chiropractor who passed away from cancer in 2021 and was well known for his love of sports and, most importantly, supporting young athletes.

That was a major piece of advice from Emporia State Federal Credit Union IT Specialist Victor Ibarra in a recent interview with KVOE News regarding “spoofing” efforts, which remain a major concern for local banking institutions. Ibarra explains that spoofing is deceiving someone by disguising one’s identity to make it appear as though they are a representative of a trusted establishment or entity.
