Medical and mental health reports highlighted the Lyon County Commission’s weekly action session Thursday morning. This included the annual report from Crosswinds Counseling and Wellness presented by CEO Amanda Cunningham, which showed increases in services, staffing and patients over the past year. To be specific, Cunningham reported a 17 percent increase in services, 12 percent increase in new staffing and a 14 percent increase in clients served.

A celebration of life is coming next weekend for a longtime member of Lyon County’s emergency communications department. Ron Buckridge, the former Deputy Director of the Lyon County Emergency Communications Center, passed away March 30 at the age of 55 following a six-year battle with cancer. A native of Emporia, Buckridge graduated from Hartford High School and went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Emporia State University.

Facility matters highlighted the most recent meeting of the USD 253 Board of Education Wednesday evening. The biggest talking point of the evening was a first reading for a proposed update, really a complete redesign, of the Emporia Middle School track and field. According to EMS Assistant Principal Adrian Trujillo, the track and field is fast approaching its end of life and is showing signs of its age.

The first of several events for the annual Newman Regional Health Denim and Diamonds fundraising effort is coming up soon and it’s a sell-out. Newman Regional Health will kick off fundraising for D&D with its now-annual golf tournament next Friday, May 2, at the Emporia Golf Course. Newman Community Relations and Outreach Specialist Kacie Hastings, a guest of KVOE’s Morning Show on Tuesday, announced the event has a full field and they couldn’t be more excited.
