KAKE-TV (Wichita, KS)

KAKE Television began its journey on the Kansas airwaves on October 19, 1954, starting its broadcasts from Wichita. In 1955, it became an ABC affiliate, a partnership that remains strong. In its early days, KAKE produced local programs that captivated viewers for generations. Shows such as Romper Room, Captain Bill, and Santa’s Workshop had children rushing home from school, while parents tuned in to KAKE for the latest news and weather updates. In October 1964, KAKE expanded its reach by launching the satellite station KUPK in Garden City, catering to audiences in southwestern Kansas. Today, KAKE also provides timely news and severe weather updates to viewers in northwest Kansas through KLBY and in northcentral Kansas via KHDS-LD. With programs like “Good Morning Kansas” and “KAKE News at 10,” KAKE adheres to its "On Your Side" motto, offering nearly 40 hours of locally-produced news each week. After changing ownership multiple times over its 60-plus years, KAKE was officially acquired by Lockwood Broadcast Group on February 1, 2016. The station continues to be a favorite for local news in Kansas, building on its legacy while adapting to the digital media landscape of the future.
