Where do you see yourself in five years? That was a question I could never truly answer. I always thought, “how could I predict the future?” Somehow, I knew the universe might have other plans for me. But if you had asked me 15 years ago where I’d be in five years, I don’t think I would have guessed that I’d still be at The Journal. I certainly wouldn’t have guessed I’d still be here now, 15 years later. It’s not that I didn’t want to stick around.

It has been five years since the deadly anti-Semitic attack at a kosher market in Jersey City. Four people, including Jersey City Detective Joseph Seals, were shot dead on Dec. 10, 2019, by a man and woman who were eventually killed by police after an hourslong standoff on Martin Luther King Drive. Seals, a 40-year-old father of five. was fatally shot when he confronted David Anderson and Francine Graham in a stolen U-Haul van in Bayview Cemetery.

Police are investigating the fatal shooting of an Elizabeth man in Jersey City Sunday night, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office said Monday afternoon. Shortly after 11:20 p.m. Sunday, Jersey City police were notified of a shooting on Fairview Avenue, between John F. Kennedy Boulevard and West Side Avenue. When officers arrived at the scene, they located a male victim, later identified as Dushawn Bell, 34, of Elizabeth, with apparent gunshot wounds.

Following the ransomeware attack that led to the closure of Hoboken City Hall and the shutdown of online services during Thanksgiving week, Hoboken has opened a call center for those with concerns over the breach, the city announced. Social Security numbers, driver’s licenses, payroll, health and other personal information of Hoboken workers and residents was among the data stolen on Nov. 27, in what one cybersecurity expert called a “massive breach,” The Jersey Journal confirmed last week.

In one of two fires in Hudson County Friday, two people died in a two-alarm blaze that broke out just after midnight Friday in a single-family home on Hamilton Avenue in Kearny, the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office said Friday afternoon. Just after 12 a.m. Friday, the Kearny Fire Department was notified of a fire at 56 Hamilton Ave. Two victims were discovered in the home with serious injuries.
