COLUMBIA — On a frigid morning, several members of the Columbia NAACP and other community members gathered at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial at Battle Gardens to pay homage and honor the legacy of the civil rights activist. Dedicated in 1993, the memorial remains a symbol of King's legacy. "At least once a year we're coming down here to let you know that there is a Dr. Martin Luther King memorial down here," said Mary Ratliff, NAACP president emeritus.

In the 2022 general election, the nationwide voter turnout rate was 46%. That may seem low, but 2022 saw the highest voter turnout in a midterm election since 1970, according to the Pew Research Center. Most counties in Missouri are in line with the national trend. Within mid-Missouri are Laclede and Morgan counties, two counties with different stories. In Laclede County, more registered voters sat out the 2022 election (53%) than participated (47%).
