Bigfork Fire Department is putting a 20-year bond for up to $15 million before voters this fall for a new fire station and upgrades to its current facilities, according to the department’s Public Information Officer Al Benitez. The Bigfork Fire Department Board of Trustees voted last week to put the bond and a mill levy before voters in a Sept. 9 special election to address infrastructure and staffing deficiencies.

May 30—The Bigfork Fire District Board of Trustees recently approved a bond initiative and mill levy to present to voters in a Sept. 9 special election that will address infrastructure and staffing deficiencies. Bigfork Fire Department officials say they are experiencing increased calls for service while grappling with aging buildings, outdated equipment and limited staff. "Our emergency responders are doing life-saving work with limited resources," Fire Chief Jeremy Patton said in a news release.

May 28—Sam Ayers has been an integral part of the Bigfork cross-country team since he moved to the school district in his freshman year. His positive attitude has helped him overcome obstacles, including bouncing back from surgery to correct his chest cavity. Ayers grew up in Seeley Lake, but his family made the move to Bigfork to give him more opportunities after graduation. He needed help with math and his speech, and his mother heard Bigfork's special education team was excellent.

Bigfork Water and Sewer District’s longtime manager Julie Spencer is retiring at the end of June. Her predecessor will be Assistant District Manager Tyler Hantz. Spencer has been with Bigfork Water and Sewer for 26 years. Hantz said those will be big shoes to fill, but she has left him with a lot of knowledge and history of the district. The district is encouraging public participation during their leadership transition, including comments on a recent rate study completed by a third-party company.
