A lifetime’s involvement in racing industry quietly came to a close for Warrnambool’s Pat Ryan last Sunday. Ryan, 78, has been involved in racing for more than 65 years. He was 12 when he started work for the late, great Warrnambool trainer Kevin Lafferty, having his first race ride for Lafferty at 14. His career in racing has seen the father of eight in the roles of apprentice jockey, flat jockey, jumps jockey, trainer, strapper and stablehand.
