Champion jumps jockey Steven Pateman is counting on bold front-runner Stern Idol to give him a record breaking fifth victory in the Galleywood Hurdle at next week’s Warrnambool May racing carnival. Pateman is still undecided about a ride in the Grand Annual Steeplechase but has a firm booking to ride the Andrew Bobbin-trained Duke Of Bedford in the Brierly Steeplechase, the carnival’s other jumps feature. “I’ll be riding Stern Idol in the Galleywood — you can lock that one in,” he said this week.

The Grand Annual Steeplechase has lost another of its star prospects weeks out from the 2025 race. The John Leek-trained Tom Foolery, who ran third in last year’s Grand Annual, injured his near-side tendon in a highweight flat race at Kyneton last week. The setback comes two weeks after a leg injury forced the retirement of Ciaron Maher’s top jumper Wil John. Leek said Tom Foolery would have a long rest before making a return to jumps racing.
