SPEEDWAY, Ind. – For an Indianapolis 500 that started off like a Saturday night trophy dash in a quarter-mile bull ring, with cars bouncing off each other and the walls of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway early and often, it ended in sublime fashion.

MINOOKA – Hurdler Weston Averkamp, of Ottawa, likes cold weather. Boy, was Wednesday a day for the senior. Averkamp set his season-best time of 14.48 seconds in winning the 110-meter hurdles at the Class 3A Minooka Sectional to advance to next week’s IHSA state meet at Eastern Illinois University. Those baubles, named after NHRA founder Wally Parks, only go to the winners of Sunday’s match-play finals.

JOLIET – The notion that a warm day means slow times on the track was dispelled Wednesday at Joliet Central, where fast times were common in the Southwest Prairie Conference Boys Championship under sunny 75-degree skies. Take Dontrell Young’s day.
