Aircraft leasing executive Paul Barton left an estate valued at €17.5 million when he died last September, according to documents published by the Probate Office this week. Mr Barton, of Waltham Terrace, Blackrock, Co Dublin, was managing director of GE Capital Aviation Services, the world’s largest commercial leasing and financing company by number of aircraft, before a €25 billion deal with rival AerCap saw the world’s two biggest aviation leasing companies join forces in 2021.

The hottest day in Ireland since August 2022 has been recorded with a 29.6 degrees in Co Roscommon. Met Éireann said that the value at Mount Dillon this afternoon is the highest since 32.1 degrees was recorded at Durrow, Co Laois on August 13th, 2022. It’s the highest June temperature in Ireland since 2018 and also the earliest time a 29 degrees has been seen in Ireland since records began. The previous record was June 26th, 2018.

Friday is set to be another day of glorious sunshine across Ireland with temperatures expected to hit 29 degrees. Met Éireann said after possible early-morning thunderstorms in the west, the island will bask in pleasant conditions, the coolest of which will be 20 to 23 degrees in Munster and south Leinster. Night-time temperatures are not expected to fall below 12 degrees on Friday, although isolated showers are possible in parts of Ulster and Leinster.

The number of male victims of recorded sexual offences rose by 54 per cent in 2024, according to the latest figures from the CSO. The increase related mainly to a near-doubling of such crime incidents that were reported by males more than a year after the occurrence. According to the CSO data Recorded Crime Victims 2024 and Suspected Offenders 2023, the vast majority of suspected offenders of sexual crimes were also men.

The Ombudsman Ger Deering has said he is “cautiously optimistic that a long-standing injustice” in relation to supports for people with disabilities to access personal transport “is about to be righted”. In his annual report for 2024 published today, Mr Deering welcomed a commitment from the Department of Transport to develop a new scheme to support people with disabilities to access personal transport.
