A long-running campaign to bring an 8.6 hectare site overlooking Magheramore Beach in Co Wicklow into public ownership has been successful. Wicklow County Council announced on Wednesday that it has bought the property which includes access to the popular Magheramore Beach, after a Chinese bidder successful at a recent auction withdrew from the sale.

The good weather is set to continue on Wednesday, with top temperatures of up to 20 degrees in hazy sunshine and light breezes. The best of the weather and warmest temperatures are expected to be experienced in the south and west of the country, with cooler conditions in the northeast. According to Met Éireann there is a chance of some light showers at times but overall plenty of dry weather and sunshine is in store for the rest of the week.

Flotillas of boats, waterborne parades in Dublin city and the annual Dublin Boat Rally are all in doubt this year after Irish Rail said it was unable to lift a bridge to allow boats to enter the city from the Royal Canal. The Inland Waterways Association of Ireland’s (IWAI Big Cruise includes a range of activities on the Grand and Royal canals as boats make their way to the capital for the Dublin Rally. Parades of boats on the Liffey and activities in the Grand Canal Basin were also planned.

Commuters waiting at Greystones railway station in Co Wicklow on Monday morning were distinctly “unimpressed” by fare increases brought in under changes by the National Transport Authority (NTA). “Unfair” was how Loretta McDonald, waiting for a Dart to Dublin, described the rises. She said the increases – which raised the cost of a single cash fare from Greystones to Dublin Connolly from €3.90 to €5.10 and a return cash fare from €7.20 to €9.20 – were wrong.

Former bishop Brendan Comiskey, who resigned following claims he failed to deal properly with child sexual abuse allegations, has died aged 89. The once rapidly rising and articulate member of the Catholic hierarchy resigned as bishop of Ferns in 2002 after the BBC aired a documentary called Suing the Pope, which uncovered more than 100 allegations of abuse by 21 priests over more than three decades.
