Cameron County health officials are working to get a handle on a tuberculosis outbreak that has hit two nursing homes. The county Public Health Department is conducting a TB contact investigation that will involve testing more than 600 people to determine if they’ve been exposed to the bacteria. Those who’ll be tested are current and former residents and staff members of the Harlingen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and the Veranda Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center.

It was her destruction of his Illegal drugs that triggered a San Juan man to attack his mother, and moments later to attack the police officers who responded.¬†That’s according to the probable cause affidavit for the arrest of 18-year-old Enrique Martin Ayala. The affidavit, obtained by the McAllen Monitor, states Ayala pushed his mother after she destroyed his drugs Tuesday night. She went to police. Officers went to the home.

An 18-year-old San Juan man is facing charges of attempted capital murder for attacking police as they responded to a family violence call last night. Officers were called to a residence on the 400 block of Cancun Lane where the 18-year-old reportedly was attacking his mother. The man was somehow able to stab three officers and get away. He was on the run for about an hour before he was captured a short distance away. The suspect was hospitalized for undisclosed injuries.

Hidalgo County finally has the document it needs to open its new courthouse. Edinburg Mayor Ramiro Garza confirmed to 710 KURV Tuesday that the city has issued the county a certificate of occupancy. That means the new 7-story courthouse passed its recent re-inspection. The re-inspection was required in order to ensure the myriad construction flaws that plagued the new courthouse and delayed its opening had been repaired.

Hidalgo County prosecutors have secured a guilty plea from the second of four men charged in a drive-by shooting in which a 6-year-old Alton-area girl was killed. 47-year-old Juan Roman Garcia Olaguez, who was charged with capital murder, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of murder. As part of the plea agreement which would being a lesser prison term, Olaguez must testify against a co-defendant in his trial that begins Tuesday.
