I stood on the lawn of the Royal Lahaina Resort, taking in a breathtaking stretch of Maui’s Kaanapali coast a short distance from the touristy buzz of Whaler’s Village, and I had to remind myself that a little more than a year earlier, fire had raged through Lahaina, burning homes and businesses to the ground, taking lives, and leaving scores of people with nothing.

The Corona del Mar resident started the nonprofit 22 years ago with her husband Paul after their son Hawken was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Since then, the organization has made significant strides in advancing the care, treatment, and cure for the disease. What would you tell your younger self, knowing what you know now? Giving back is the best way to make an impact. I wasn’t raised in a family that was particularly philanthropic.

Magnani began her career as a dancer, performing in music videos and commercials until she caught the attention of Martin Scorcese and landed a role in a major film. She has appeared in numerous television series, and has written and directed two award-winning short films, “In Shreds” and “Regarding Rose,” the latter of which is currently on the festival circuit and, as of press time, has garnered 11 awards. In addition to writing and directing, she also teaches acting and dancing in Laguna Hills.
