In the first part of a special in-depth interview with the Courier, former Halifax Town manager Chris Wilder looks back on his time as a player and manager at The Shay. The seeds of success that Chris Wilder has achieved in more than two decades of management were sown at Halifax Town. Wilder was named LMA manager of the year and Championship manager of the year when he led Sheffield United into the top flight in 2019, and he nearly did so again last month.

Hebden Royd town council has formally elected Councillor Keith Butterick as Mayor for the 2025–2026 civic year. The appointment was made during the annual meeting of the town council, held on Tuesday, May 20 at Hebden Bridge Town Hall. Councillor Steve Woodhead was also appointed as deputy mayor.

Calderdale could see 2,500 more hectares of trees and woodland, thanks to a new tree planting and management plan for North and West Yorkshire. The council is being asked to support the White Rose Forest Strategic Plan (2025-50), as one of the partner organisations helping to deliver the work. Councillors will discuss the plan, and Calderdale’s tree planting progress, at the next cabinet meeting on Monday 2 June 2025.

The RSPCA in Halifax has launched a special appeal to find a forever home for a lurcher who has been waiting over 200 days for his second chance at happiness. Cooper, aged two, was rescued by an RSPCA officer, living in unsuitable conditions and kept outside. He came into the care of the RSPCA Halifax, Huddersfield, Bradford and District Branch, whose headquarters are in Halifax, in September last year but sadly has received hardly any applications for adoption.

Lister Horsfall jewellers and Halifax bus station have both been given accolades by the Halifax Civis Trust for their architecture. Following a substantial investment in 2024, Lister Horsfall unveiled a newly refurbished and extended showroom, which was inspired by buildings such as the Piece Hall. Portland stone now dominates the façade of the new extension which is styled to celebrate the grandeur of the local architecture.
