KV dominates Bombers in girls' track, Bomber boys edged by rivals

WHEATFIELD - Kankakee Valley captured 15 of 16 events to dominate county rival Rensselaer Central, 115-17, in girls' track Thursday night at KVHS. Mia Hoffman-Buczek won three individual titles and Avery Myers and Krista Sytsma won two events each. Hoffman-Buczek won both the 100- and 300-meter hurdles in 17.54 seconds and 51.48 seconds, respectively, and Myers was the 100-meter dash champion in 12.91 and the 200 meters in 26.75. Hoffman-Buczek also won the long jump at 14 feet, 1 inch.

The Kougars outclawed and outlasted Wheeler in what was definitely a catfight throughout the first half, emerging victorious with a 35-21 win to go up 2-0 on the young season.

DeMotte – In conjunction with the Market in the Park held each Wednesday on Spencer Park, the DeMotte Park Department offered a Bubble Party and Movie Night on July 10. Sponsored by Belstra’s and DeMotte State Bank, the family-oriented fun featured a frolic in the foam generated by a bubble cannon from Let’s Bounce, as well as a pair of inflatable bounce attractions.

Wheatfield – The Kankakee Valley School Board met on Monday, July 8 for their regular monthly meeting, called to order by Board President Kristy Stowers, at 6:00 PM. after silent meditation and the Pledge of Allegiance with all members present. The Minutes from the June 10, 2024, Board Meeting were approved as were Corporation Claims for $2,166,721.97 and Cafeteria Claims in the amount of $114,136.81.

DeMOTTE — The DeMotte Little League Senior Girls Softball team defeated Roselawn to advance to the state tournament which will be hosted by the Southeast Little League in South Bend next weekend. The DeMotte team is a combined effort with players from both the DeMotte and Wheatfield Little Leagues. They defeated Roselawn twice on Saturday in Roselawn to earn the District 1 title. In the first game, Karlie Hogge pitched 13 strikeouts while giving up only one walk.
DeMotte teen wins annual Firecracker 5K Race in Hebron

HEBRON — The annual running of the Firecracker 5K Race in Hebron went off like a firecracker on the Fourth of July. Jenna Walker, 14, of DeMotte, was the overall female winner with a personal record time of 19 minutes, 24.4 seconds. Joshua Tuck, 19, of Valparaiso, was the overall male winner with a time of 16:57.8. Walker’s time was good enough to make her the 21st runner of either sex to cross the line.
Area Enjoys Hebron Fourth of July Celebration

Hebron – A phalanx of firetrucks kicked off the annual Fourth of July Parade in Hebron promptly at 10 AM following a flyover by the Indiana National Guard jets. The parade, as the only celebration in the nearby area, drew near-capacity crowds along Main Street as celebrants from the home town as well as from DeMotte, Wheatfield, Roselawn and more came to enjoy the spectacle.
