Artist Lyn Evans at work (Image: Supplied) An accomplished Threlkeld artist shared her talents recently with members of an art society. Keswick Society of Art met at the St Herbert’s Centre in High Hill, with Lyn Evans doing a demonstration of winter landscapes in pastel. "Lyn is an accomplished artist in the mediums of oil, watercolour and pastel, and her work may be found in local galleries and private homes both here and abroad," said a spokesman.

Cockermouth Civic Trust, which is 56 years old and describes itself as the town's "voluntary watchdog", recently announced it would close next October if new committee members were not found. Two members stepped down from the committee at the AGM in November.

Lots of people enjoyed the weekend festival (Image: Tom Kay) Thousands of people ate, drank, shopped, sang and watched the experts in action this weekend as Taste Cumbria Christmas came back to Cockermouth. The festival took place in the heart of the town, on Main Street and Market Place, where there were producers’ stalls, live music marquees, the Demo Stage and children’s activities, alongside street theatre and hot food and drink.

2 1/1 Fun, friendship and fitness are at the heart of a thriving Cockermouth group. Cockermouth Scottish Country Dance Club started in 1960 with a few friends getting together to dance and has since blossomed into a busy club catering for a range of ages and abilities. "We seem to be attracting new adults in the wake of Covid and have started new classes for beginner adults as well as our children’s class and general club night," said member Gail Inglis.

Ian Ewart McDowall, 51, died at Haverigg Prison on April 10. Staff at the prison were praised for the way they dealt with the situation and aftermath, an inquest held in Cockermouth on Thursday heard.

Nearly 1,000 international buyers registered to bid online during a recent Cockermouth auction. Mitchells Antiques & Fine Art Sale included several artworks by Percy Kelly, 30 original drawings by Alfred Wainwright and a large private collection of rare vintage Scotch Whisky. And there were exciting surprises too with some lots greatly exceeded their estimates.
