Diver drowns north of Isle Royale National Park

ISLE ROYALE, Mich. (WZMQ) – At approximately 1:45 pm on Thursday, the Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office received a call from the Isle Royale National Park about a drowning. According to a press release, the diver that drowned from from a charter dive boat. The incident happened while they were diving on the north side of Isle Royale. The Keweenaw County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the National Park in the investigation.

NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The City of Negaunee announced that they have learned that the area of Old Town that was previously approved for residential development is actually protected more than previously thought. In a press release, the city said that they recently learned that the 315-acre property is encumbered by an agreement with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, and is restricted from all non-recreation development forever.

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Northern Michigan University Athletics has announced that head hockey coach Grant Potulny will be stepping down to pursue a position at the professional hockey level and athletic director Rick Comley will be taking over as interim head coach, effective as of today. A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately. Associate head coach Byron Pool and assistant coach Nick Peruzzi have also stepped down to accept coaching positions elsewhere.
Two arrested after stabbing at Escanaba bar

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – Two people have been arrested following a stabbing that took place at the Granada Bar in Escanaba early Saturday morning. At approximately 12:24 a.m. on Saturday, August 5, officers from the Escanaba Department of Public Safety were dispatched to the back lounge area of the bar for a report of a male victim who had been stabbed. Upon arrival, officers found the victim, who had been stabbed in the abdomen resulting in serious injuries.

One man arrested in Escanaba following stabbing

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – One man has been arrested following a stabbing that occurred Thursday evening in the city of Escanaba. At approximately 6:30 p.m., Escanaba Public Safety Officers were dispatched to the 1300 block of 1st Avenue North for a report of a stabbing. When officer arrived on the scene, they found a male subject who had been stabbed on his forearm. He was transported to OSF St. Francis by Rampart for treatment. Officers learned that multiple weapons were involved in the incident.
Multi-county high-speed pursuit ends with arrest of Florida Man

MENOMINEE COUNTY, Mich. (WZMQ) – A Florida man was arrested in Menominee County on Wednesday evening after multi-county high-speed pursuit. The 35-mile pursuit started in Dickinson County, and ended in Nadeau Township. According to the Menominee County Sheriff’s Office, they were first notified of the pursuit at approximately 7:55 p.m. on July 27 by the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office.

ONTONAGON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Friday, July 14, at approximately 2:15 p.m., the Michigan State Police Negaunee Regional Dispatch received a call about an upside-down kayak on Lake Superior in Ontonagon Township near the Firesteel River area. A local resident had observed a kayaker paddling out onto the lake at approximately 1:00 p.m. earlier that day. The same resident later saw the kayak floating upside down.
U.P. Honor Flight raising funds by raffling coffee table

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Upper Peninsula Honor Flight is raising funds for it’s upcoming flight to Washington D.C. by raffling off a one-of-a-kind coffee table. The table was built and donated by Nature’s Way Woodworking, which is based out of Alberta, Michigan. It is made out of bird’s eye maple, and has inlaid stones from all around the world surrounding the U.P. Honor Flight logo. According to U.P. Honor Flight president Scott Knauf, this donation has been in the works for quite some time.
