Whether it’s for financial reasons or lack of decent homes, West Siders have few options when it comes to finding a quality home to purchase in their neighborhood. Systemic disinvestment in communities like Austin, East Garfield Park and West Garfield Park has led to population loss and gentrification over the years. For example, from 1980 until 2017, East Garfield Park lost 43 percent of its Black population over that period of time. Today, the population in East Garfield Park stands at 19,992.

On Tuesday, President Joe Biden won Michigan’s Democratic primary handily, but more than 100,000 “uncommitted” ballots, or about 13 percent, were cast after organizers mounted a protest-vote campaign to send a message regarding the president’s support of Israel in its war on Gaza. In Chicago, activists say the war could impact the primary here, as well as the Democratic National Convention in August and the general election in November.

With ShotSpotter’s contract renewal approaching later this week, Chicago officials, activists and residents remain divided on its use and reliability. However, this morning, the Chicago Sun-Times reported that Mayor Brandon Johnson is expected to announce that he won’t renew the contract. According to Ald. Chris Taliaferro (29th Ward), the contract would be extended until September, to get the city through the summer and the Democratic National Convention, and then it will be terminated.

EAST GARFIELD PARK — A $38 million affordable housing development coming to East Garfield Park will begin leasing in the spring, officials said. The Fifth City Commons development, 3155 W. Fifth Ave., will begin leasing its affordable apartments in April, representatives for developer Preservation of Affordable Housing Midwest told neighbors at a Garfield Park Community Council meeting Wednesday.
