Dana Vowinckel's new book straddles the narratives of daughter and fatherIn her debut novel, Misophonia, Dana Vowinckel explores the cultural diaspora through one teenager’s summer across Berlin, Jerusalem, and Chicago. It’s a coming of age story that balances the narratives of a daughter and her father as well as the fifteen-year-old protagonist’s abrupt (and reluctant) reunion with her mother. The book is also a semi-autobiographical trek through parts of Vowinckel’s own life.

In 1865, when New York insurance broker-turned-property developer Melville Mead purchased farmland that would eventually become Prospect Avenue in Darien, he envisioned lining the 8-acre field with some of the town's most prestigious houses. Blessed with rolling hills and unobstructed views of Long Island Sound, Mead carved the land into 24 building lots and set out to erect properties in a variety of architectural styles.

After a massive oak tree fell on her property in Woodbury a few years ago, landscape designer Anna Haines sensed an opportunity. She and her husband, Kyle Haines, spent the following days in the yard of the saltbox Colonial they share with their two young daughters removing limbs and carving up the tree's rounded outgrowth and trunk.

By the time he obtained his freedom sometime between 1850 and 1860, and settled in Williamson County, Tennessee, Richard Poynor was already a well-established craftsman. Born a slave in Halifax County, Virginia, he earned a living making chairs noted for their gracefully curved mule-ear posts and triple-slat backs, a pioneering style that was sought after by wealthy enslavers and common folk alike.
