Two company directors in Northern Ireland have been jailed for their roles in running one of the largest illegal dumps in Europe. A judge at Derry Crown Court today described their actions as an environmental crime on an industrial scale. The vast Mobuoy dump outside Derry is thought to cover more than 100 acres of land, or the size of about 70 football pitches. It is located beside the River Faughan, which supplies a large proportion of Derry's drinking water.

A man has been remanded in custody after being charged with murdering his mother in Belfast. Mary Green, 71, who was known as Marie, was pronounced dead at her home in the early hours of Tuesday. PSNI officers and paramedics responded to a call about an incident in a house on Shore Road in the north Belfast. They found the body of Marie Green inside. Her son, Lewis Green, appeared at Belfast Magistrates' Court charged with murder.

A judge in the case of former DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson and his wife on historical sexual offences will review it later this month after receiving medical reports. A review hearing at Newry Crown Court this morning was told the judge had received three separate medical reports, with a further health assessment due to take place next month. At the end of a short hearing Judge Paul Ramsey said he will review the case again at the end of June and early August.

Sinn Féin has again urged the British government to abide by court rulings ordering a public inquiry into the murder of GAA official Sean Brown in 1997. A coroner, High Court judge and three judges in the Court of Appeal have all ruled that a public inquiry is the only lawful remedy. The Irish Government has also backed calls by Mr Brown's family for a public inquiry.
