A 26-year-old Española woman has been charged in connection with her 15-month-old daughter’s death from an apparent fentanyl overdose on April 1. New Mexico State Police Agent Mario Villanueva charged Ariana Vigil with one count each of child abuse resulting in death and possession of a controlled substance. If convicted, Vigil faces a sentence of up to life in prison on the child abuse charge.

A woman who sued the Hoy Recovery Center last year, after she alleged she was raped by a man in the program in 2022, has dismissed her lawsuit after reaching a settlement. The woman, a mother of three, is only referred to as “Jane Doe” in court documents. She alleged she was repeatedly raped while in the program by a man with a lengthy criminal history for drunk driving and domestic violence. The settlement was for an undisclosed sum.

A Santa Fe man, who allegedly threatened his mother’s neighbor with a knife and told him he was going to kill him, surrendered to Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputies as they were on the precipice of breaking into the apartment he was holed up in. Deputy Joey Graves charged Ricky Martinez, 30, on Feb. 23, with one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

A Dulce man pleaded guilty to two counts of assault of an intimate partner by strangulation and faces up to 10 years in prison. Chalmers Dedios, 32, pleaded guilty to the two charges on Feb. 3 in federal district court in Albuquerque. He has been held without bail by federal authorities since Jan. 8, on the orders of Magistrate Judge Steven Yarbrough, but was held for nearly a year before that by tribal authorities, according to federal court records.
