One dead in early morning shooting

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - One person is dead following an early Saturday morning shooting in Charleston, West Virginia, according to dispatchers. Metro 911 dispatchers confirm a shooting took place along Railroad Avenue before 3:30 on Saturday morning. The Charleston Police Department are investigating the shooting. Man arrested for trafficking narcotics following pursuit

CANNONSBURG, Ky. (WSAZ) - A man has been arrested by Kentucky State Police following a vehicle pursuit where police said he discarded multiple bags of narcotics from the window. Benjamin Layne is facing multiple charges including wanton endangerment of a police officer, tampering with evidence, reckless driving, several drug trafficking charges and several fleeing or evading police charges. Kentucky State Police said is happened during a traffic stop, where they claim Layne first evaded them.
Gas restored to over 1,200 customers on Charleston’s West Side

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - Mountaineer Gas Company says approximately 1,250 customers and 96% of the 46 miles of gas lines affected have had their gas services restored as of 11 a.m. on Thanksgiving. They assure the community that MGC crews and contractors will be working throughout Thanksgiving and the weekend until services are restored to every customer. They anticipate main line system restoration in 3 days, with customer service lines needing to be individually restored.
Kanawha County drug takeback day results

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office participated in a national drug takeback event on October 28th. They said residents surrendered 127.5 pounds of unused medications. These medications were then collected, packaged and turned over to the DEA for proper disposal. The sheriff’s office said that working with the community and federal partners on events like this help to fight drug addiction and substance abuse.
Person taken to hospital after water rescue

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - One person has been transported to the hospital after a water rescue in the Kanawha River. The Charleston Fire Department said the water rescue took place near Haddad Riverfront Park after a man fell off a boat and went underwater. They said the person was alive and CPR was administered. Woman dies in fatal crash

PIKE COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) - A woman has died in a two-vehicle crash between a tractor-trailer and passenger vehicle in Pike County, Ohio on Friday. The crash happened after 2:30 p.m. on State Route 32 at Tennyson Road. Ohio State Highway Patrol said the passenger vehicle attempted to cross State Route 32 and failed to yield to a tractor-trailer. Officials said Deborah Crabtree, 40, of Lucasville, died at the scene of the crash. Passengers were flown from the scene due to their injuries.

LINCOLN COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) - Police in two states are looking for a man they said stole a car and then blew past a stopped school bus while leading police on a chase Wednesday. The West Hamlin Police Department said the man was driving a white Ford focus with an Ohio license plate. According to officials, the car was reported stolen earlier Wednesday in South Point, Ohio. Then, the owner of the car spotted the car on the move in Lincoln County, West Virginia.
Portion of I-77 shutdown; tractor-trailer crash

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) - All lanes of I-77 North at the 105 mile marker are shut down, according to the Sissonville Fire Department. Kanawha County 911 dispatchers confirm that a tractor-trailer is leaking diesel fuel on the interstate. They said a tire blew out and busted a whole in the tank. The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office and Sissonville Fire Department are on scene of the crash. There is no word on when lanes will be re-opened. Keep checking the WSAZ app for the latest information.

Former police officer sentenced on drug charges

IRONTON, Ohio (WSAZ) - A former police officer with the Ironton Police Department has been sentenced on drug charges. FORMER STORY: Police officer faces drug charges, among othersBradley Spoljaric was arrested in July of 2022 and faced domestic violence, aggravated possession of drugs, and tampering with evidence charges. On July 18, 2023, Spoljaric entered a guilty plea and was found guilty for aggravated possession of drugs, a felony of the third degree.
