Autistic adults, relative to non-autistic adults, have higher rates of medical disorders, both acute and chronic (Cashin et al., 2018; Croen et al., 2015; Forde et al., 2022), physical or sensory disabilities (Rydzewska et al., 2018), psychiatric disorders (Lai et al., 2019), and poor general health (Rydzewska et al., 2019).

1 Introduction Increasing evidence demonstrates that higher levels of physical activity improve wellbeing (Marquez et al. 2020) and are associated with reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety (Teychenne et al. 2020). In addition to being active, the amount of time spent sedentary and the quantity and quality of one's sleep are key factors related to wellbeing and mental health (Dong, Xie, and Zhou 2022; Ellingson et al. 2018; Zhang et al. 2022).

1 INTRODUCTION International evidence suggests a significant over-representation of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD), in various parts of the criminal justice and forensic mental health systems, including prisons (Fazel et al., 2008; García-Largo et al., 2020) and inpatient and outpatient forensic mental health care (Lin et al., 2017; Ray et al., 2019).

YCs described their perceptions of interactions with the healthcare system while caring for a family member. In doing so, three main themes with subthemes emerged: (1) navigating the YC role within the healthcare system, (2) being kept out of the loop, and (3) normalising their own transition to caregiving.
