One of North Carolina's largest health systems, and its associated medical school, will see a major leadership change in the coming months. Dr. Wesley Burks, CEO of UNC Health and dean of the UNC School of Medicine, will step down from these roles on Sept. 1, after serving in both positions since December 2018. Burks will instead focus more on the development of a 500-bed children's hospital in the Triangle, which UNC is developing alongside Duke Health.

Duke Health now has its own hospital in the Charlotte region. But its growth plans aren't stopping there. Duke Health is expanding its footprint after closing a $284 million deal to acquire a hospital in the Charlotte region. The health system based in Durham acquired Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in Mooresville from a subsidiary of Community Health Systems (NYSE: CYH). The deal is part of Duke Health's broader growth plans across North Carolina.
