The U.S. Department of Education has pulled a $7 million grant Lincoln Public Schools received to provide school-based mental health services, district officials said. In a Thursday news release, LPS said it got a non-continuation notice for the five-year grant awarded in 2023 as part of $1 billion the federal government was disbursing to help districts nationwide to hire more psychologists, counselors and other mental health workers.

Gov. Jim Pillen on Monday extended a ban on prescribed burning for western and central Nebraska amid dry conditions, but lifted the prohibition for eastern parts of the state. Pillen's latest order bans burning in areas of the state west of a line that runs south along U.S. 81 from the South Dakota border to U.S. 92, where the line juts west to U.S. 281 and then south to Kansas. Burning to the east of the line is permitted except when the National Weather Service issues a red flag warning.

Gov. Jim Pillen signed an executive order issuing a statewide burn ban Wednesday as wildfires rage near Ainsworth two days after a prescribed burn got out of control. The so-called Plum Creek Fire in Brown County in northern Nebraska had already scorched more than 6,600 acres amid dry, windy conditions and was 0% contained as of Wednesday, Pillen and other officials said at a news conference in Lincoln.
