This isn't simple speculation, but an interpretation of what Seattle has done in free agency over the last month or so. General manager John Schneider did not choose a cornerback in the 2025 NFL draft. This implied he was OK with giving most of the reps to Riq Woolen and Devon Witherspoon.

Where is the intensity? The Seattle Seahawks have not yet signed 2025 second-round draft pick Nick Emmanwori to a contract. There is zero reason to panic. It will happen. His signing might even happen before you finish reading this article. Eight of Seattle's 11 draft picks have signed their rookie deals. That includes first-round choice Grey Zabel, who inked a four-year contract (with a fifth-year team option) for $18,471,460, all of which was guaranteed.

Smith had been a three-year starter for Seattle, but he was in his mid-30s, and his ceiling might have been reached.
