Representatives of two of the entities reported on their efforts to address opioid addiction in the county over the last year. Berrien County is getting $8.2 million over 18 years from the nationwide opioid settlement reached more than a year ago.

Anthony Christopher Thomas, 21, of Terre Haute, Ind., pleaded guilty to carrying a concealed weapon and unlawful use of a motor vehicle and was sentenced to two concurrent 270 day jail terms with credit for 10 days served and $326 in fines and costs. The incident occurred Dec. 19, 2024 in Buchanan Township. Defense attorney Richard Sammis said Thomas came to Michigan to buy marijuana and had guns in his car.

Six 911 telecommunicators were honored with one winning “Dispatcher of the Year” honors. Berrien County 911 Administrator/Director Caitlin Sampsell and Berrien County Undersheriff Greg Sanders presided over the presentation. Sanders is chairman of the county’s 811 Advisory Committee.

Edwardsburg, Dowagiac Brandywine and Cassopolis have been awarded first-team academic all-state in Division 2 and Division 3, respectively from the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan. To earn the academic honor, a team must have a GPA of 3.3 or higher to be all-state, while those squads with a GPA of 3.0 to 3.2999 are named honorable mention.
