JamesSuckling.com is the culmination of my 30 years in journalism and wine criticism. The site offers a variety of content, including tasting notes, videos, blogs, and event coverage, all centered around some of the finest wines from regions like Italy, Bordeaux, Champagne, Australia, New Zealand, California, Chile, and Argentina. I believe that modern wine enthusiasts deserve more than just written evaluations; they should also experience the vineyards, meet the people, and understand the rating process. There’s a wealth of knowledge to gain about wine beyond just numbers and descriptions. Each year, we taste thousands of wines, often in their natural settings. While most tastings are not blind, I do use paper bags for larger, organized events. I evaluate young wines not only for their immediate enjoyment but also for their aging potential. Early in my career, I learned that exceptional wines should evolve positively over time, a principle I still hold true. When assessing mature wines, I focus more on their current enjoyment. My editorial team adheres to the same wine review standards. I utilize a 100-point scale, a system I've trusted for nearly 25 years, as I find it to be the clearest way to rate wines, originating from the traditional grading system in U.S. schools. Wines scoring 90 points or above are considered outstanding (A) and are ones I highly recommend. A wine rated 95 points or more (A+) is a must-have and one I’d love to drink entirely! On the other hand, wines rated below 88 points might still be worth considering, but I would advise caution before purchasing. For unfinished wines, such as those tasted from the barrel, I use two-point ranges like 90-91 or 92-93.
