    Recently, Gogebic Community College shared how a $5,000 grant has supported three student-led projects on campus. The first project supported by the Xcel Energy Grant enabled students to test hemp samples using a gas chromatograph, laying the groundwork for further collaboration between the state of Michigan and Northern Michigan University. A second project led by students studied plant tissue cultures to explore disease-free cloning in tomatoes and industrial hemp plants.

    Two Houghton High School students plan to represent their school and the Upper Peninsula at this year’s National History Day Competition next week. But they need some help to get to the University of Maryland for the event. Samantha Blake’s mom, Jessica Tolonen says the pair recently placed first at the state competition at Central Michigan University. Some kids will do a documentary website. The two children in this particular instance did a performance.

    KORC completes its most successful annual peninsula clean up event in five years. Since 2020, the Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition in mid-May has organized groups for clean-up sites throughout Houghton and Keweenaw counties. Each year the organization cleans up former dump sites that were once common in the community. As well as having groups travel many busy hiking trails, roadside parks, and beaches where people may have forgotten a wrapper or two.

    The Copper Country Intermediate School District serves more than 6500 students across three counties. Since the start, it has worked to provide essential services for the Baraga, Houghton, and Keweenaw’s disabled children, offered early childcare programming, and provided technical skills training to the region’s high school students. Serving students across three counties and providing essential services to the region’s 14 districts comes with challenges.

    Today Houghton’s community toured the CCISD CTE construction technology program’s latest build. The home sits on Red Oak Lane, on a hill, overlooking the city. Students worked closely with local contractors over the school year to complete the project. Real estate agent Clea Ollanketo says it was great to see students leading the community through the open house event and to see the house finished. The students are doing a great job giving professional tours of the home.
