Fatal crash on U.S. 89 Thursday closes freeway

INDIANAOLA, Sanpete County — Both directions of U.S. 89 were closed for a time on Thursday after a fatal crash involving a semitruck, according to the Sanpete Sheriff’s Office. The sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post that a crash occurred on U.S. 89 at mile marker 293, just south of Big Hollow Road. The Department of Public Safety said the crash involved a 68-year-old male driving a 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe.

200 evacuated from Salt Lake Metro Jail after fire breaks out

SALT LAKE CITY — Fire officials said 200 people were evacuated from the Salt Lake Metro Jail on Thursday after a fire broke out. According to officials on scene, a contractor was working on the HVAC system in the building at the time the flames began, which was sometime before noon on Thursday. Fire Chief Terry Addison with the South Salt Lake Fire Department said many fire departments responded to the scene. Addison made no mention of any possible injuries.
16-year-old allegedly shoots uncle in Riverton before fleeing, police say

SALT LAKE CITY — Police are investigating a shooting involving a 16-year-old boy Wednesday night. Josh Lee with the Riverton Police Department said the incident took place around 6:30 p.m. A 16-year-old boy and his 35-year-old uncle got into a “verbal argument” at a home near South Homestead Lane. Lee said the argument led the two to the front yard. At some point, the 16-year-old allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot the 35-year-old three times before fleeing the scene.

SALT LAKE CITY — South Salt Lake hopes to get plans for a new police station set in the next five years. The proposed police station would be near an existing homeless shelter, near 3500 South 1000 West. The city just went through the first step of the process, acquiring 1.4 acres of land from the county. The transfer will only cost the city $10, but if it does not build the substation or at least have plans to break ground within five years, it will be returned to Salt Lake County.

Utah health officials said the passenger arrived in Salt Lake City, rented a car, and then drove to Idaho. They later developed symptoms in Idaho, where they were diagnosed. The Great Salt Lake typically rises and then falls about 2 feet every year, with snow and then summer heat. But year-over-year, the levels have only gone up since bottoming out in 2022, thanks to a couple of great winters. It broke even last year and only went up by about a foot and a half this winter.
