We are waking up to a cool to mild start this morning in the 50s and 60s with patchy fog and and even some scattered showers and a few thunderstorms still out and about in Deep East Texas. Due to a stalled cold front, scattered rains could continue in southern portions of Deep East Texas even into the afternoon today. For those who see sunshine in the afternoon, expect warm highs in the lower 80s.

WACO, Texas (KWTX) - The capital murder retrial of a Dallas man charged in a conspiracy to rob and kill his co-defendant’s Waco landlord in December 2022 is scheduled to begin Monday morning in Waco’s 19th State District Court. Brandon Stephens, 21, is the co-defendant of James Keylan Willis, also of Dallas, who was sentenced to an automatic life prison term with no parole after his capital murder conviction last week in the death of 59-year-old Stanley Wilcox.

HILLSBORO, Texas - Jury selection is set to begin Monday in the trial of a Hill County man who twice has caused mistrials during previous jury selection efforts, including blinding his former attorney in one eye after punching him in the face in front of 80 potential jurors. Christopher Donte Loud, who turns 40 on Wednesday, is set to stand trial in 66th State District Court on charges he broke into his 87-year-old grandmother’s home in Hubbard and struck her in the head in October 2023.

EAST TEXAS (KLTV/KTRE) - We’re waking up to more mild and muggy conditions with temperatures in the 60s and even low 70s with mostly cloudy skies. Southerly winds will be breezy again today, blowing at 10-20 mph sustained with some gusts reaching upwards of 25-30 mph at times. Expect another mix of sun and clouds this afternoon as temperatures climb into the middle 80s for highs. A stray shower or two will be possible later in the day, but most will likely stay dry..

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - A Tyler man accused of helping to run a dogfighting ring has had his trial date pushed back. Michael Cameron Jones, 31, is accused alongside his brother, Kerry Jones, 34, of Tyler, in a dogfighting operation that was shut down last summer in Smith County. Michael Jones appeared before Judge Debby Gunter Thursday for a hearing, in which his trial date was delayed.
