Two East Texas nonprofit organizations have joined to expand the reach of their women’s services. The merger of Son Shine Lighthouse and Wiseman Ministries renames a facility in Overton to Wiseman Lighthouse. Formed in 2003 in Longview, Wiseman Ministries started as a way to help homeless people, many of whom were battling addiction, said founder and CEO Tim Wiseman.

A Pine Tree ISD bond proposal about five years in the making aims to maintain facility integrity and encourage students' career preparedness, according to district officials. Earlier this month, district trustees approved placing a $55 million bond referendum on the November ballot that, if approved, would come in two phases and fund work to extend the life of several of the district's campuses. Pine tree ISD voters last approved a bond in 2011 for $29.9 million.

The Gregg County Master Gardeners Plant Sale opened at 9 a.m. Saturday, but even before then, eager customers already were lined up outside the gate at the Longview Arboretum and Nature Center. By 11 a.m., the numerous tables that had been lined with plants and trees had dwindled to one lone table that patrons continued to flock to. The sale was on track to soon sell out, and according to Master Gardener Cindy Coleman, local support and interest in unique vegetation is the reason why.

The Gregg County Sheriff’s Office is set to receive new tactical shields, dispatch service upgrades and more after county commissioners on Thursday approved the purchases. Gregg County Judge Bill Stoudt said $30,000 of federal coronavirus relief funds set to be used for the purchase of a mobile command vehicle were left over after the vehicle came in under budget. That money now will be used to improve dispatch services at the sheriff’s office.
