The Newton Weekly Journal was founded by James Welford, who wore many hats as a printer, painter, and picture-frame maker. He took on multiple roles, including owner, editor, reporter, compositor, reader, foreman, pressman, clerk, canvasser, stationer, and collector of unpaid debts. With the assistance of just one other person, they operated out of a former grocery store located at 10 Queen Street.
