It was only a week ago that I wrote that Burton Albion don’t do routine seasons. That was a couple of days after League One safety had been confirmed with a game to spare. As I said then, even given the many ups and downs of the last decade, the season just gone was extraordinary – new owners, 23 signings, two managers, an awful start, an overhaul of the playing squad and eventual recovery. Albion were undone by two goals in two minutes just before half-time, one somewhat fortunate, one neatly created, but there was always the feeling that the Blues had a few more gears to go through had they needed to.

Burton Albion returned from Devon with what could prove an important point in their League One survival battle from a goalless draw with Exeter City. It was difficult for either side to play good football and create much in terrible conditions, with almost constant rain and with standing water on parts of the pitch.
