    A young child in Virginia has contracted measles, representing the third case of the highly contagious diseases in the state this year, the state health department said. The child is younger than 5 years old, lives in the northwest region of the state and caught the illness after being exposed to another measles case in Virginia. The health department released no other details about the patient. The child could have exposed other unvaccinated people in the Charlottesville area.

    Kings Dominion has named Jennifer Schofield its new leader, after its parent company, Six Flags Entertainment Corp., laid off a number of employees last week. Among those Six Flags let go was Bridgette Bywater, Kings Dominion’s vice president and general manager. She had been the Hanover County amusement park’s chief since 2024. Six Flags has reduced its workforce twice since it merged with Cedar Fair LP, Kings Dominion’s previous parent company, last summer.

    For several years, Virginia’s halfway homes for recovering addicts have been managed by an independent, non-government group. That will soon change, to the dismay of some local recovery home operators. Language in this year’s budget takes nearly $2 million away from the Virginia Association of Recovery Residences, or VARR. The organization certifies group homes, of which there are more than 100 in Richmond and Henrico.

    The city of Richmond is moving closer to remodeling a mostly empty island in the heart of the James River into a public park. Last month, the city's planning commission approved the general look and feel — called the location, character and extent — of plans to transform Mayo Island. The designs do not require approval by City Council.  City officials plan to spend $16 million, which they say will revitalize an underutilized section of downtown Richmond.

    The city of Richmond is not planning to sue the Virginia Commonwealth University Health System as part of their prolonged disagreement over a failed real estate deal. For more than a year, the city and the state-affiliated health system have been at odds over $56 million that VCU Health promised the city in 2021 as part of the unsuccessful Clay Street real estate project. But state leaders have told VCU Health to stop writing the checks.
