Times & Transcript

Times & Transcript

The Times & Transcript has been a staple in Moncton and its nearby regions for 145 years. It all began in 1868 when Thaddeus Stevens and James Brewster launched the weekly Moncton Times, which transitioned to a daily format in 1877. During a period when newspapers often displayed strong political biases, a group of Liberal entrepreneurs purchased a weekly publication called The Transcript in Sackville in 1882 and relocated it to Moncton, transforming it into a daily paper to rival the Conservative-leaning Moncton Times. The Moncton Transcript struggled to make a significant impact until 1887, when the dynamic John T. Hawke was brought in from Ottawa as the new publisher. This appointment was reportedly orchestrated by Sir Wilfred Laurier himself. Stevens and Hawke soon engaged in a fierce editorial rivalry, much to the enjoyment of their increasing readership. In 1893, Stevens departed from the Times amid a scandal involving legal issues related to his wife's manslaughter charge. Meanwhile, Hawke left his mark on the Moncton community, leading the Transcript until his passing in 1922.
